INSPIRED TO TRAVEL

Journey through Cinema: My Definitive Compilation of Travel Movies

Back in 2008, I put together a list of the top ten travel movies. It was a solid list, but a lot has changed since then. I’ve seen many more films, especially during flights, and I’ve come across some truly inspiring travel movies. So, I thought it was high time I updated my list. Here are my all-time favorite travel movies that will make you want to pack your bags and explore the world:

  1. Lost in Translation: This movie takes you right into the heart of bustling Tokyo. It’s about two people, played by Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, who find themselves lost in their hotel until they decide to venture out and explore Tokyo. The city’s energy is infectious and will make you want to book a flight to Japan.

  2. Whale Rider: This movie tells the story of a young girl in a Maori village who struggles to gain her grandfather’s acceptance. The real highlight here is the portrayal of Maori culture, which is both fascinating and moving.

  3. Lord of the Rings: This epic film showcases the stunning landscapes of New Zealand, from glaciers to forests. It’s a must-watch for adventure seekers and has even inspired many to visit New Zealand.

  4. Into the Wild: This movie is based on the true story of Christopher McCandless, who embarks on a journey to escape materialism and connect with nature. It’s a poignant reminder of the importance of simplicity and the joy of living.

  5. In Bruges: This comedy, set against the beautiful backdrop of Bruges, will make you want to visit this historic city.

  6. Under the Tuscan Sun: Despite being a typical romance movie, the real star here is Tuscany. The stunning Italian countryside will make you want to pack up and move to a small Italian village.

  7. Nowhere in Africa: This German film tells the true story of a Jewish family that escapes the Nazis and starts a new life on a farm in Kenya. It’s a touching portrayal of adapting to a new culture.

  8. Crocodile Dundee: These movies not only launched Paul Hogan’s career but also sparked a fascination with Australia. They portray Australians as free-spirited pioneers with a love for the wilderness.

  9. Up in the Air: This movie resonates with long-term travelers. It explores the mixed emotions associated with constantly being on the move.

  10. The Beach: This movie, set in Thailand, explores the hopes and realities of travel. It’s a great reflection on the search for an idyllic, romantic paradise.

And the list goes on, with movies like The Motorcycle Diaries, Any Indiana Jones, Thelma and Louise, Lawrence of Arabia, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, A Good Year, Eurotrip, Seven Years in Tibet, The Darjeeling Limited, Midnight in Paris, Monsoon Wedding, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Way, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Y Tu Mama También, Wild, Before Sunrise, A Map for Saturday, Tracks, Roman Holiday, Queen of Katwe, Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

Each of these films, in their own unique way, captures the essence of travel and adventure. They inspire us to explore new places, experience different cultures, and embark on our own adventures. So, if you’re looking for some travel inspiration, these movies are a great place to start.
