It’s funny how our preconceived notions about a travel destination can be way off base. Take the Canary Islands, for example. I always thought of them as a budget-friendly spot for a typical beach holiday, kind of like the European version of Florida. You know, with those big hotel resorts and older tourists in bucket hats. But boy, was I in for a surprise when I actually visited!
The landscapes of the Canary Islands blew me away. Tenerife, for instance, has these epic mountains in the northeast that feel like a whole different world from the touristy beaches in the south. The nature hikes and charming towns there really won me over, prompting me to write a guide showcasing a different side of the island.
And let’s talk about island-hopping! La Gomera, just a short ferry ride from Tenerife, felt like stepping into Jurassic Park with its lush forests and volcanic scenery. It’s so untouched and wild, you’d think you’re in the Caribbean. Who knew the Canaries had such a rich cultural side to explore?
Then there’s La Palma, known for its top-notch hiking and stellar stargazing. I mean, it’s up there with Hawaii and Chile for some of the best views of the night sky. I even got a personal tour of the universe from a local astronomer – how cool is that?
Originally, I just wanted to escape the winter blues and work remotely from the Canary Islands. But these islands turned out to be so much more than just a sunny getaway. From digital nomads to eco-tourism, there’s a whole range of experiences waiting to be discovered.
Sure, some parts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria weren’t exactly my cup of tea, but that’s the thing about travel – you never know until you go. The Canary Islands have so much to offer beyond the typical tourist traps. From adventure sports to whale watching, there’s something for everyone.
So, if you’re looking for a travel destination that will surprise and delight you, give the Canary Islands a chance. I certainly had my eyes opened, and I can’t wait to see what other hidden gems I’ll discover on my future travels.
