Explore Antigua Guatemala: Uncover 7 Unique Experiences Uncover the charm of Antigua Guatemala beyond its pastel-colored houses and stunning volcano views. From visiting Hobbitenango to hiking to Volcano Fuego, taking free Salsa classes, and dining where the locals eat, there’s a wealth of experiences waiting for you. Don’t miss catching the sunrise at the arch, chilling at Earth Lodge, and discovering quality experiences without the hefty price tag. Antigua offers much more than meets the eye.

When I first got to Antigua, Guatemala, I was super excited. This city used to be the capital, and everyone I talked to had great things to say about it. I thought there’d be tons of awesome stuff to do. But after hiking up Volcano Acatenango and wandering through the cute streets, I was kinda stumped on what else to check out. Antigua seemed pricey, full of tourists, and not as cool as I expected, with fast-food joints blending in with historic buildings.

Luckily, I had a good chunk of time to explore Antigua, so I gave it another shot and discovered why people love it so much. I ended up wishing I could stay longer, just like many other visitors. What really won me over wasn’t the charming streets or lively bars. It was the peaceful beauty you find off the beaten path.

Since Antigua is a hotspot for all kinds of travelers, finding unique experiences can be tough. But here are seven things you can do to break away from the crowds:

  1. Visit Hobbitenango: Yes, I know "Lord of the Rings" was filmed in New Zealand, not Guatemala. But there’s a place called Hobbitenango in the hills above Antigua that’s worth a visit. You can catch a shuttle from the north side of Antigua for $75 Quetzals ($10 USD). It’s best to go on a clear day to enjoy the stunning views of Antigua and the nearby volcanoes.

  2. Hike to Volcano Fuego: While hiking up Volcano Acatenango is a popular activity in Antigua, don’t miss out on the chance to hike to the ridge of the active Volcano Fuego. It’s a thrilling experience to see Fuego erupt every 15-20 minutes.

  3. Take Salsa Classes: If you’re into dancing, don’t miss the free Salsa classes at New Sensation School. They’re a fun way to meet fellow travelers and learn some moves.

  4. Try Local Street Food: For affordable eats, head to Tanque La Union in the morning for baked goods and snacks, or visit Iglesia de la Merced in the afternoon for street food near the Santa Catalina Arch.

  5. Visit Santa Catalina Arch at Sunrise: To beat the crowds and get a great photo, visit the iconic Santa Catalina Arch at sunrise. It’s a peaceful time to appreciate this historic site.

  6. Relax at Earth Lodge: When you need a break from the city, head to Earth Lodge for tasty food, drinks, and a stunning view. You can stay overnight or just spend the day enjoying the tranquility.

  7. Dine at Toku Baru and Rincon Tipico: For delicious yet affordable meals, check out Toku Baru for a mix of Indonesian, Indian, and Middle-Eastern cuisine, or visit Rincon Tipico near the main square for a hearty meal at a great price.

If you want more ideas for things to do in Antigua, consider going on a free walking tour, visiting the chocolate museum, exploring Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint, attending the pool party on Saturday night, checking out Hotel Casa Santo Domingo, or taking a stroll through Cementerio General. These activities offer a mix of history, culture, and fun experiences to make your trip to Antigua memorable.
