I’m a big fan of hostels. They’re a great way to meet new people and they’re often the most affordable accommodation option. But how do you know if a hostel is good or not? After staying in over a thousand hostels, I’ve learned a thing or two about what makes a hostel great.
Firstly, a good hostel has a common room. As a solo traveler, I love meeting new people and common rooms make it easy to do so. They’re also great for relaxing and having fun, with pool tables, TVs, and comfy couches. If you’re traveling to a warm destination, look for a hostel with an outdoor common area like a rooftop bar or patio.
Secondly, location is key. I always make sure my hostel is centrally located and close to public transportation. This saves me time and money as I don’t have to spend a lot on taxis or waste time commuting.
Cleanliness is also important. Just because we’re budget travelers doesn’t mean we have to stay in dirty places. Avoid hostels that are poorly maintained and always read reviews for hints on cleanliness.
Speaking of reviews, always read them before booking. They can give you a good idea of what the hostel is like. Is it quiet or noisy? Are the beds comfortable? Are there any issues with cleanliness? Websites like Hostelworld and Booking.com have tons of reviews to help you make an informed decision.
Another thing to look out for is whether the hostel organizes group activities. These can be a great way to meet other travelers and learn about your destination. My favorite hostels are always the ones that organize events.
Lastly, here are a few smaller things to consider: Does the hostel offer free breakfast? What’s the check-out time? Does it have lockers for your belongings? Is there a kitchen where you can prepare your own meals? Does it have clear rules?
Remember, the people you meet can make or break your hostel experience. But a great hostel will have many of the qualities I’ve mentioned and will enhance your travel experience. Happy travels!
