When it comes to ecotourism, Colombia might not be the first place that pops into your mind, but it’s actually one of the best countries for it! Colombia boasts the highest biodiversity on Earth, second only to Brazil. Its geography is incredibly diverse, with both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, three vast mountain ranges (including the start of the Andes), and landscapes that range from dry deserts to lush jungles. Plus, about a third of Colombia is covered by wild Amazon rainforest.
Even though Colombia hasn’t actively promoted itself as an ecotourism destination like Costa Rica has, it’s still a hidden gem for nature and eco-tourism. Let’s dive into some amazing spots in Colombia where you can experience the beauty of nature:
-
Minca: This small mountain town has recently gained popularity thanks to improved accessibility. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada National Park, Minca offers a range of ecolodges and eco-hostels with stunning views of the jungle canopy. It’s a great place for bird-watching, with Jungle Joe’s offering fantastic bird-spotting tours.
-
Utria National Park: Located on the Pacific Coast, Utria is a hidden gem known for its raw and unspoiled nature. During whale season (July to November), you can witness humpback whales in their natural habitat. Bahia Solano and Nuqui are ideal villages for eco-tourism on the Pacific Coast.
-
Los Nevados National Park: Experience the unique páramo ecosystem in the Andes at Los Nevados National Park. Trekking, biking, or jeep tours can be arranged locally to explore the park’s volcanoes and diverse landscapes.
-
Rincon del Mar: This beach village on the northern coast offers a peaceful retreat with opportunities for bird-watching and snorkeling. Dive centers organize trips to reefs where you can encounter fascinating marine life.
-
Valle del Cocora: Home to the iconic wax palm tree, Valle del Cocora near Salento is a popular destination for hiking and wildlife enthusiasts. Explore the valley’s beauty and visit nearby attractions like hummingbird and butterfly sanctuaries.
-
Barbas Bremen Nature Reserve: Located near Filandia, this reserve provides a chance to spot the Colombian red howler monkey. Enjoy guided hikes in a pristine natural setting away from the crowds.
-
The Amazon Rainforest: While I didn’t get a chance to visit the Amazon during my time in Colombia, it’s a must-see destination for wildlife and cultural experiences. Leticia and Puerto Nariño offer ecotourism opportunities, while emerging destinations like San José del Guaviare provide unique adventures.
Colombia is truly a paradise for nature lovers, offering a wide range of eco-friendly experiences in its diverse landscapes. Don’t miss out on exploring these hidden gems and immersing yourself in the beauty of Colombia’s natural wonders!
