Unveiling the Price Tag: The True Cost of Backpacking Through China

Are you curious about the cost of backpacking in China on a budget? I’ve been to China five times and I’m still loving every moment of it. I hope to show you a different side of this vast country, one that’s not just about big factories, a communist government, and stifled people.

Let’s break down the costs:

Accommodation Costs
China has some of the best hostels in the world. In most tourist spots, you’ll find a variety of hostels. A dorm bed typically costs between 25-50 RMB ($4-$8), while private rooms are around 100 RMB ($15). If hostels aren’t available, chain hotels like Super 8 or 7 Days Inn offer rooms for about 140 RMB ($20). On average, you’ll spend about 40 RMB ($8) per day on accommodation.

Food Costs
Chinese food is different from what we’re used to in the west, and it’s definitely cheaper! Street food costs around 8 RMB ($1.30), while a meal in a local restaurant is about 15-30 RMB ($2.50-$5). If you’re a backpacker, avoid expensive western or high-end dining. Expect to spend around 30 RMB ($5) per day on food.

Sights and Activity Costs
This is where it can get a bit pricey. Major attractions like national parks or famous sights can cost around 200 RMB ($30) for a ticket. However, you won’t be visiting these every day. Smaller temples and activities are more reasonably priced at around 10 RMB ($1.60) per sight. On average, you’ll spend about 70 RMB ($11) per day on sights.

Transport Costs
China is a big country, but it has good transport links. A 10-hour bus ride costs around 65 RMB ($10), while a 10-hour train ride costs 50 RMB ($8) for a hard seat or 120 RMB ($20) for a hard sleeper. Local transport within a city costs 2 RMB ($0.30) per subway ride or 1 RMB ($0.15) per bus ride. On average, you’ll spend about 25 RMB ($4) per day on transport.

So, the total daily budget for backpacking in China is around $28, plus a $5 wiggle room. And don’t forget travel insurance, which is just $9 a week.

So, is it expensive to travel in China? Not really, if you’re on a backpacker budget. For around $900 per month, you can backpack in China. That’s about $30 a day. But remember, sticking to this budget means being mindful of your spending. Always consider whether the extra comfort or experience is worth the extra money. Despite its growth, China is still a relatively cheap country to travel in. So, get here soon before they take over the world and crank up their prices. Happy travels!
