Explore 10 Exciting Locations on a Shoestring Budget: Less Than $50 a Day!

Everyone dreams of traveling more. Whether it’s a vacation, a career break, or a gap year adventure, we all have that wanderlust. But there’s one common hurdle we all face: money. Saving for travel can feel like climbing a mountain, especially when you consider the costs of travel insurance, gear, flights, and the high prices of some destinations. It can seem almost impossible.

But don’t lose hope! Even if you manage to snag a cheap flight, the daily expenses of exploring a new country can be daunting. But there are plenty of amazing, affordable places to visit. Some of them might even be cheaper than your daily life back home!

In this post, I’ll share some of my favorite budget-friendly countries and regions.

  1. Thailand: Despite its popularity among tourists, Thailand remains relatively cheap. You can live on less than $35 USD per day, excluding some popular tourist islands. Budget dorms cost $10 USD per night or less, street food is cheap, and tours and activities are affordable.

  2. Mexico: Mexico is a treasure trove of Mayan ruins, stunning beaches, lush jungles, and world-class food. Hostels cost as little as $10 USD per night, street tacos are $1 USD or less, and even big-ticket activities like visiting the Tulum ruins or Chichen Itza are just $5-15 USD.

  3. Portugal: Portugal is one of the cheapest countries in Europe, offering charming cities, stunning coastlines, and beautiful weather. You can get by here for around $50 USD per day without missing out on the amazing food, fun activities, and delicious wine.

  4. Central America: Central America is one of the cheapest regions of the world for backpacking. In countries like El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, you can travel on $30-50 USD per day or less.

  5. Hungary: Hungary, particularly Budapest, is an affordable destination. Hostels in Budapest start at $10 USD per night, meals at markets or kebab and sandwich shops are around $5-10 USD, and a beer is less than $2 USD.

  6. Peru: Home to the epic Wonder of the World, Machu Picchu, Peru is one of the most popular countries in South America. Everyday life in Peru is quite affordable, with hostels available for $8-12 USD and street food for $1-2 USD.

  7. Bulgaria: Bulgaria is an under-the-radar country with no crowds and affordable prices. Hostels are only $10 USD per night, street food is just $4-5 USD, and most museums are only $5 USD.

  8. Vietnam: Vietnam is one of the cheapest countries in Southeast Asia. You can enjoy a day in Vietnam for as little as $15 USD.

  9. India: India is a must for budget travelers. Hostels and guesthouses here are as little as $5 USD, while delicious food can be had for $2 USD or less!

  10. Taiwan: Taiwan is one of the most underrated countries in Asia. It’s super affordable, safe, clean, and has plenty of things to see and do.

There are many great destinations in the world that don’t have to cost a fortune. While some of these destinations might be expensive to fly to, once you get there, they are incredibly affordable. By visiting some of these more affordable budget destinations you’ll be able to stretch your budget and make your trip financially attainable, allowing you to travel longer and more often.
